Maya Deren-Filmmaker and Visionary

Maya Deren (1917-1961) is thought of as the original unconventional filmmaker in the United States that became well-known. She was also a film theorist. Her work tied the science of depicting human culture with psychology, and literary ideas. Her work is conceptual and connects film with performance. During the 40's and 50's, she worked with cinema as art eschewing dramatic narrative and Hollywood concepts.

The Museum of Modern Art will present a film series of her work starting 05/14/10 and ending 10/04/10. The exhibition is called Maya Deren's Legacy: Women and Experimental Film. Filmmakers Hammer, Schneeman, and Friedrich will be interviewed by Sally Berger. They will comment on Deren's influence of their art.
