H. Beam Piper-Police Operation

"Police Operation" was published by Astounding Science Fiction in July of 1948. The parallel worlds or versions of Earth are divided into five levels. In this conceptual universe, humans colonized Earth from Mars. The timeline we occupy wasn't colonized very successfully, and the people haven't any  recollection of the colonization, so we are in the fourth level. But the transplanting in the first level was outstanding, thus, the Paratime Police originated there.

The illustrations are by Edd Cartier. This story's copyright wasn't renewed. The video sound effect "Crazy Brass" is a creation of musiforvideo.com.

He Walked Around Horses- H. Beam Piper

"He Walked Around Horses" is the first short story in the Paratime Police series. It is said that Piper hinged his story on on a report of the disappearance of the British diplomat Benjamin Bathurst; his father was the Bishop of Norwich of the Church of England. His disappearance occurred during the Napoleonic Wars in Germany. His vanishing exit from life kindled much guesswork about what happened to him. Though, most likely he was a victim of foul play.

Piper used this unfortunate disappearance as a jumping off point for his story. In Piper's short story, while journeying home from Austria and traveling through Prussia, Tortha Karf plucked Bathurst up with a Paratime conveyer. He is left in a different timeline that forked off in 1775 at the Battle of Quebec. Benedict Arnold dies from his wound in Piper's story. And other historical changes follow from that divergence.

The video is composed of drawings by Edd Cartier. The story was published in 1948 in Astounding. The copyright wasn't renewed.

The music is by Kevin MacLeod and found at incompletech. The piece is called “Bad Ideas.”
