Giotto di Bondone: Adoration of the Magi: Christmas Paintings

Giotto though painting during the Late Medieval Period is known as an early Italian Renaissance artist because he broke away from the Byzantine stylization and drew and painted from reality in three-dimensional accuracy.

 His Adoration of the Magi is dated ca. 1305. It is located in the Cappella Scrovegni a Padova also referred to as the Arena Chapel. The name for this particular subject comes from Latin in which the title is A Magis adoratur. It is a Nativity scene, but focuses on the three kings from the Orient and their gift giving and supplication. Thus, the Nativity by itself is a manger or a cave scene with the parents, baby Jesus and farm animals and adoration scenes are a variation on the theme.

Painting in Acrylics Then Oils: On Loosening Up

You remember that I posted a painting created by my Aunt Sue. It is a sports painting: boxers. But she also painted landscapes. Sue was very adept at drawing a portrait.

I've been thinking about what she said the first time she saw some of my acrylic paintings; she wasn't impressed, and she thought I should stick with my writing. But I kept on painting anyway. Eventually,  I got better.

I switched to oils. When I started taking painting classes, my teacher took the brush from me and put several brushes in one of his hands, and proceeded to give me a lesson on loosening up. He only painted with one brush at a time in case you are wondering. He also said I squeezed my paint tubes like his ex-wife squeezed the toothpaste. Not a stellar day in my painting lessons experience. But the advice to loosen up was good, and I applied his suggestion.

Then a local gallery started selling my paintings, and the owner took one of my paintings to the art auction in New Orleans.  I became artist in residence at a now defunct gallery in Georgia, but the collectors bought my paintings.

If you are having some trouble with your painting technique, maybe you should loosen up too. Definitely, keep on painting. Here's to your success.

Updates on The Bedroom's Restoration Online

Van Gogh's painting The Bedroom is being restored. Each step of its restoration will be posted at Bedroom Secrets . Every step in restoring a painting has never been shown online via a blog before. All Vincent Van Gogh aficionados will enjoy seeing this process.

The painting went through a complete analysis in 2009 and a record was logged concerning its condition. A scenario for its restoration was adopted from the results of the analysis carried out by scientists and personnel from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

Mobile Museum of Art

In 2002 the Mobile Museum of Art was enlarged to 95,000 sq. feet. and become the biggest art museum on the Gulf Coast from New Orleans to Tampa. It sits in lovely Langan Park. There are more than 8000 permanent works in the museum, which entail over two hundred years of culture in their expression. It also presents traveling exhibits and regional works.

This fall three traveling exhibits are gracing the Mobile Museum of Art: Jun Kaneko's ceramic sculptures, Francisco Goya: Los Caprichos, and GlassWear: Glass in Contemporary Jewelry.
