Superheros: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

By OCAL at clker.com

This movie promises to be a great superhero, action-adventure sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger.

Two years have passed after the battle of New York. Our hero continues to travail in an effort to adjust to the contemporary world. But a S.H.I.E.L.D. cohort is bashed, and Steve Rogers (Captain America) gets caught up in an enigma that might jeopardize the world.

He and Natahsa Romanoff (Black Widow) team up to reveal the dastardly plot to demolish the world and recreate it. Someone inside S.H.I.E.L.D. is behind this conspiracy; at first, Nick Fury sides with this rogue. Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon unexpectedly skirmish with James (Bucky) Barnes (The Winter Soldier) and once the sidekick of Cap.

If it is as good as its predecessor, this film will deliver a fun and exciting film experience.

The Returned, 2014, Zombie Movie, Manuel Carballo

People are infected with a zombie virus. Everybody knows it. The opposition forces are anti-return.

The returned must take a regimen of the return protein every 36 hours that holds the virus back, but doesn't cure it. This is why the opposition is obsessed with getting rid of the infected people. Plus, the hospital's medicinal protein cache might be used up soon.
By OCAL at clker.com

Kate and Alex have another big problem to face too. The government orders all of the returned to go  to a medical establishment for their own welfare. Supposedly.

Kate is an employee at the hospital where the infected get their injections. She and Jason abscond with the retroviral drug that she hoarded to keep Alex alive and normal.

The film isn't a gore zombie movie, but plays with the idea of people doing something bad to live on or get through, such as, Kate taking medicine for Alex meant for the infected children. The movie may be expressing some sociopolitical concepts relevant to Spain. But the viewer must decide.

The Returned was released in Spain in 2013 as Retornados at Sitges Film Festival on October 18th. Tomorrow on February 14th is the release date in the U.S.A.

Hatem Khraiche wrote the film's story. Manuel Carballo directed it.

The Werewolf: Henry MacRae

By OCAL at clker.com
The Werewolf  is said to be the first werewolf movie. Unfortunately, this silent gem venturing into the original attempt at a werewolf movie is lost to the succeeding generations. It was consumed in a fire in 1924.

Macrae, a Canadian, was a screenwriter, director, and producer that went on to work for Universal Studios. He directed more than 130 movies. He produced serials like Flash Gordan Conquers the Universe and The Green Hornet. He also directed many westerns.

The 1929 film Tarzan the Tiger debued his "talkie" movie phase.

MacRae had the kind of imagination that sparks the interest of people that like speculative ideas, stories, and movies. This is proven by his list of science fiction, horror, and mystery serials and movies. Pioneers like him got the ball rolling and moving forward for us.

FreeBorn: Anthony Brownrigg: Tasha

By OCAL at clker.com
FreeBorn. Whatever has happened to the movie? Werewolf fans have been waiting in horrific anticipation for years to no avail. The story idea is that these werewolves are suburban dwellers trying to keep their existence secret.

The Indiegogo site raised funds for the making of the movie. Anthony Brownrigg has previously produced an Indie film called Red Victoria.

Brownrigg setup a site named The Pack for the fans to converse and share ideas they would like to see in a werewolf movie.

Who knows when this Indie film will debut and thrill us with its new concepts?

I, Frankenstein: Kevin Grevioux-Lionsgate

Frankenstein Monster Silhouette by Studio Hades at openclipart
The creator of the Underworld movies has a new action horror movie premiering 01/24/14.  I, Frankenstein promises to be an action take off on a traditional idea that does something imaginatively different with the concept first envisioned by Mary Shelley.

Grevioux's concept holds onto the am I monster or man inner turmoil. But Adam Frankenstein is caught in a dystopia--the world is grime and gargoyles and demons are at war. This take on Shelly's monster and his struggles is definitely original. His genetic aberration caused by his genesis has prolonged his life.

Grevioux wrote the screenplay and the graphic novel. Stuart Beattie later worked on the screenplay and directed. The producers are Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, and Sidney Kimmel. Aaron Eckhart plays Adam Frankenstein. Lionsgate is the film's distributor.

Okay, horror and action fans, let's see it and give it a yea or a nay for ourselves.

Why Movie Spoofs?

I've written about movie spoofs several times on this blog. But why spoof movies? Well, its just fun to do. The writer or director that creates a spoof about a science fiction, horror, or western scenario has to like the genre or the making fun of it wouldn't be good natured. That would ruin the comedy.

In turn, the viewer should like the original genre or the comedic nature of the spoof won't be as funny to him. For example, if you are familiar with the 1950's atomic science fiction, then having fun with it will make more sense to you. That's the way I see it. What about you?

Journey to Planet X, 2012: Myles Kane, Josh Koury, Eric Swain, Troy Bernier

Journey to Planet X is an interesting documentary that follows the making of an amateur movie Planet X. The scientist duo create their own science fiction movies on the weekends.

The documentary follows Eric Swain and Troy Bernier in the creating of  Planet X  in
Florida sand dunes, using a green screen, and a supermarket freezer. The green screen which is a wall painted green has a better lighting effect than the blue one they had been using. The freezer helped simulate the cold of outer space.

They hired a storyboard artist and two animation artists to improve this film over what they had done before. At the end of the documentary, their movie has its first outing and they are invited to show it at a film festival. Excitement ensues.

Trisha Barkman produced Journey to Planet X. Josh Koury and Myles Kane were co-directors. The documentary screened at numerous film festivals like Calgary, Traverse City, and Strasborg.

Troy and Eric's movie Temple of Joy was funded at Kickstarter.

The thing about Planet X  is that its creators can inspire you to create something and be as determined as they are to keep going to greater heights.

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001)

From wpclipart.com
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra satirizes the 1950's monster, science fiction, B-movies. The film is independent, low-budget, and originally shot in color and transformed to black and white after production to be in sync with 50's films.

The mad scientist with the insane laugh is portrayed by Brian Howe as the character Dr. Roger Fleming. His imitation of the prototypical mad scientist laugh is very good. The mad scientist character is a concept of the 1920's movie era. His goal is to find the lost skeleton so he can become powerful.

Larry Blamire plays Dr. Paul Armstrong; he goes into the mountains hunting the scare element called atmosphereum. The doctor correctly thinks that it is in a fallen meteorite. He and his wife Betty played by Fay Masterson epitomize couples of the era as shown in movies.

Further into the movie, Betty does a swoon and is carried away by the monster. This is hyperbole in step with the fainting heroine confronted with a scary or distressing buildup in the plot.

This overstatement of the feminine response to fright or shock was a standard device of the 1950's monster movie plot. The young and pretty heroine strategically drops into the monster's arms, and he carries her away. Movie posters often depicted this image. Today, this device is only seen in spoofs.

The two aliens played by Susan McConnell as Lattis and Andrew Parks as Kro-bar land on earth and need to find (you guessed it) atmosphereum to power their spaceship. They use their transmutatron to look like an earth couple; it basically just changes their clothes. They don't understand earth customs like shaking hands or how to eat. Ditto for 1950's American earth lingo. These misunderstandings create comic effects.

Dr. Fleming watches as the aliens transform themselves and gets the contraption when they leave it behind believing it will be there upon their return. He uses it to change some woods animals into a woman he calls Animala portrayed by Jennifer Blaire. She becomes his "wife."

First, the alien couple go to the cabin to get the atmosphereum. The Armstrongs think the aliens are the landlords that they have never seen before. A funny verbal and body language scene occurs.

Then Dr. Fleming shows up with Animala. She is dressed like a female beatnik and has animal characteristics such as sniffing things, growling, and hunting for crumbs. The two couples spend the night, though the hospitality of the Armstrongs has become tepid. They think the other two couples are very odd.

During the evening, the ranger played by Dan Conroy comes to warn them of the mysterious slaying of a local farmer. The next morning, Animala does a flirtatious dance beatnik style and brings Dr. Armstrong to the skeleton that has been revived with the atmosphereum given to it by Dr. Fleming. The doctor and Animala become typical slaves of the evil skeleton.

But all ends well with the alien and earth couple becoming fast friends and the bad guys losing, and Animala being changed back to animals.

This Larry Blamire spoof is rated 7 out of 10 at IMDb.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) (2008)

The 1950's produced a film load of science fiction movies. Many of them concerned aliens attacking the earth. Some say that this phase of the movies in the United States was an artistic method for dealing with the anxieties of the cold war between the U.S.A and Russia. Films about huge monsters was another part of this overall expression.

The Day the Earth Stood Still  posed a question about the way of life in the U. S. A. during the 1950's. This is in line with literature discussing and examining life, and the original film is an adaptation of the short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates. The 2008 version works from the first film and the short story.

It is for you to decide which film does the best job of adapting the short story to the movies.  At least, it is up to you to decide which film is the best.

The tomatometer gives the original film 94% and the audience says 85%.  The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) gets a tomatometer reading of  21% and audience 32%. What do you think? Which one brings the concept across better? You say...

(Scrooge) A Christmas Carol, 1951: Christmas Movies

There are many Christmas movies, but the ones that show a change of heart to goodness definitely bring out the message of Christmas.

A Christmas Carol of 1951 adapted from Charles Dickens novel delineates the change of heart that Scrooge experiences. It is in tune with the Bible speaking of the heart as the spiritual center of mankind. Of course, it doesn't mean the physical heart, but the seat of emotion. The movie is entertaining, fun, heartbreaking at times and ultimately shows a redemption of Scrooge.

Sims portrays a snobbish and selfish Scrooge with a grim sense of humor that is unique to his portrayal. He is a tightwad that regards Bob Cratchit, his assistant as beneath him. When Scrooge looks back to his youth, we see him as kinder and able to love, but those traits are overrun by greed, and he becomes hard and mean. The three ghostly visits nudge him towards a change for the good. Ebenezer changes becoming kind, friendly, and generous.

It is a British version of the classic tale. Alistar Sim plays Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge. In the United Kingdom it premiered as Scrooge.  It was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst; Noel Langley wrote the screenplay,

It gets a tomatometer reading of 85% and the the audience rated it at 73%.

Thanksgiving Movies: Free Birds, 2013

Free Birds is a family oriented Thanksgiving movie. That said, there is some sexual content, not much. There shouldn't be any in a film aimed at children.

Adams Family Values, 1993; Thanksgiving

The Adams Family as a TV and movie phenomena is Gothic in nature.  In Adams Family Values, the dark aspect comes out more; their traditional madcap humor is subdued and the grisly side emerges.

Morticia has a baby. The siblings, Pugsley and Wednesday set to work on murdering the baby inventing numerous plans for Pubert's demise. Gomez and Morticia employ a nanny to look after the baby hoping to hinder the nasty attempts on the baby's life by the other children.

The black widow concept that has been used in other movies is utilized in Adams Family Values. The nanny makes a career of finding rich men and after getting married does them in. It always appears to be an accidental death. She latches onto Fester as her next husband victim.

While at camp Wednesday fakes having a positive attitude and goes for the part of Pocahontas in a play about the original Thanksgiving. She ruins the play by persuading three other characters to revolt and she captures them and leaves the camp.

Debbie, Fester's wife tries to electrocute him while they are on their honeymoon. Next, she tries to eliminate him with a bomb. Thing aids him in his escape. At the family reunion, she attempts to kill the family, except Pubert by using electric chairs. When she switches the electricity for the chairs Pubert saves the day.

The movie was written by Paul Rudnick, directed by Barry Sonnenfield, and produced by Scott Rudin.

Curse of the Werewolf: Werewolf Movies: Gothic Horror

Hammer Films or Hammer Film Productions created Gothic horror movies in the 50's and 60's. This company hails from London, England. We'll zero in on Curse of the Werewolf . It debuted in 1961. The flick was inspired by the novel The Werewolf of Paris authored by Guy Endore.

The setting is in Spain in the 18th century. The werewolf, Leon is born on Christmas. His mother was molested by a vagabond. She is voiceless; she cannot speak. She dies in childbirth and the boy is raised by Don Alfredo. Upon a full moon he becomes a werewolf and attacks a woman and then a prisoner, also a guard.

His romantic love for Cristina and her mutual feeling can stop his curse, but he finds out too late. His affectionate step-father though upset shoots him with a silver bullet.

From an artistic viewpoint, the music, photography, and set design are great. The director, Terence Fisher, had a great vision for the Gothic horror mood, look, feel, and atmosphere.

It was produced by Micheal Carreras and Anthony Hinds and written by Hinds.

The Fly 1958 and 1986

The original movie, The Fly, was adapted from a short story written by George Langelaan. It appeared in Playboy in June of  1957. The original movie came out in 1958, the remake in 1986. Howard Shore composed an opera inspired by the plot of the remake.
By OCAL at clker.com

There were two sequels: Return of the Fly in 1959 and Curse of the Fly in 1965. This is quite a feat for a short story if we think of it as having a persona. Quite a bit of attention given to the story and creative energy expended beyond and including Langelaan's spark and flame.

This is the plot: A dreadful accident ensues when a scientist played by Vincent Price tries out his new invention: a teleportation  apparatus. Jeff Goldblum plays the scientist in the 1986 version.

The Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer scores the 1986 version at 91%.

Alfred Hitchcock: Stage Fright, 1950: Thriller

Hitchcock 256 by android at clker.com
Hitchcock was a master in creating fright, suspense, and anticipation in the viewer.  In the film Stage Fright Hitchcock toys with reality and the make believe world as the film revolves around the theater scene in London.

Jonathan Cooper is suspected of doing in Charlotte Inwoods' husband. But he says it is Charlotte that came to his doorstep with her dress covered in blood. He brings a clean dress back from her house so Charlotte can sing on stage that night. Her theater maid spies him in the house as he tries to give the appearance of a burgher's entry.

Eve is an actress and friend that is in love with him and decides to help him dodge the police. She goes to her father and asks him to carry Jonathan to France. But Jonathan goes to sleep and Commodore Gill indicates that the blood is daubed onto the dress. Eve questions her old friend about the dress, and he becomes incensed and pitches it into the fire. Thus, this evidence against Charlotte is gone.

Eve goes on her own investigation and meets Detective Smith and feels affection for him. Nellie Goode, the maid, blackmails Eve.

Of course, there is a double crossing love interest theme in the movie. Charlotte is involved with Freddie Williams and has been leading Cooper on, not to mention her dead husband.

In the end, Cooper admits to the murder. He fulminates trying to scare Eve and attempts to murder her. She gets away. Cooper's head is chopped off by the safety curtain.

Why Do People Love Horror Movies?

People crave excitement and a scare that isn't real. The audience tends to be younger people with a sprinkling of older folks. Older people have enough experience with reality as a scary thing and tend not to be as interested in horror movies.

People that like horror films want the adrenaline ride whether on a motorcycle, skydiving or through a vicarious scare. Stephen King promised in Dense Macabre to dish out the fear. He wrote that "terror is the finest emotion, and so I will try to terrorize the reader."

This quote of Jean Lorrain may be of interest. "The charm of horror only tempts the strong." Guys that feel strong with their girlfriend hugged close to them while viewing a macabre movie would probably agreed with Lorrain.

But the psychology of the movie scare, the house of horrors at the fair, the spooky hay ride or the trip to the local, out of the way, old dilapidated house that has a reputation as haunted is a limited and safe fright event.

If these things jerk a scream out of a brave guy or gal at least they're brave enough to go and experience it, right?

Research suggests that beyond the yearning for excitement, people like horror movies because they can struggle with intense emotions, and it tends to be more a male thing, so they can prove in a group that they can handle it.

Then again, Stephen King in "Why We Crave Horror Movies" says that he believes we're all "mentally ill."
